Cardiaster was named by Forbes (1850) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 343,956].

It was assigned to Echinocorythidae by Clark and Twitchell (1915); to Holasteridae by Wagner and Durham (1966), Shmidt (1976), Kier (1984) and Smith (1991); and to Holasteroida by Sepkoski (2002).
