Acanthoceras planecostata was named by Kossmat (1897) [Acanthoceras newboldi var. planecostata].

It was recombined as Calycoceras (Newboldiceras) planecostatum by Kennedy et al. (1996) and Kennedy and Jolkicev (2004).
