Taxonomy
Madrepora clivosa was named by Ellis and Solander (1786) [Hypoteyp designated by Budd et al. 2012.]. It is extant. Its type specimen is SUI 122807.

It was recombined as Maeandrina clivosa by Verrill (1864); it was recombined as Platygyra clivosa by Vaughan (1901); it was recombined as Maeandra clivosa by Verrill (1901); it was recombined as Diploria clivosa by Smith (1943) and De Buisonjé (1974); it was recombined as Pseudodiploria clivosa by Budd et al. (2012).
