Taxonomy
Pirania was named by Walcott (1920) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm mMid-l Cm mMid-u Sepkoski's reference number: 883]. It is not extant. Its type is Pirania muricata. It is the type genus of Piraniidae.
It was assigned to Hadromerida by Sepkoski (2002); to Piraniidae by Finks et al. (2004) and Botting (2007); and to Demospongia by Bambach et al. (2007).
