Acanthoceras gadeni was named by Chudeau (1909). It is the type species of Nigericeras.
It was recombined as Nigericeras gadeni by Schneegans (1943), Meister (1989), Meister et al. (1992), Wright et al. (1996) and Guendouz et al. (2022).
