Brisaster was named by Gray (1855) [Sepkoski's age data: T Dani R Sepkoski's reference number: 1242]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Hemiasteridae by Grant and Hertlein (1938); to Schizasteridae by Fischer (1966), Chiesa et al. (1995) and Lindley (2001); and to Spatangoida by Sepkoski (2002).
