Nautilus sowerbyanus was named by d'Orbigny (1840).

It was recombined as Angulithes sowerbyanus by Wiedmann (1960); it was recombined as Deltoidonautilus sowerbianus by Shimansky (1975); it was recombined as Cimomia sowerbyana by Morris (1995).
