Taxonomy
Brissopsis was named by Agassiz (1840) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 577]. It is extant. Its type is Brissopsis elegans.

It was assigned to Spatangidae by Clark and Twitchell (1915), Grant and Hertlein (1938) and Cooke (1942); to Echinoidea by Durham (1961); to Spatangoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Brissidae by Fischer (1966), Henderson (1975), Kier (1984), Ragaini (1994), Lindley (2001) and Hansen and Hansen (2005).
