Lovenia was named by Desor (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1242]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Spatangidae by Jackson (1937) and Grant and Hertlein (1938); to Echinocardiidae by Cooke (1942); to Loveniidae by Fischer (1966) and Henderson (1975); and to Spatangoida by Sepkoski (2002).
