Taxonomy
Macropneustes was named by Agassiz (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 342]. It is extant.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Kier (1984).

It was assigned to Spatangidae by Clark and Twitchell (1915), Grant and Hertlein (1938) and Cooke (1942); to Brissidae by Fischer (1966) and Henderson (1975); and to Spatangoida by Sepkoski (2002).
