Megapetalus was named by Clark (1929) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u-u Sepkoski's reference number: 956,1242]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Paleopneustidae by Zullo and Durham (1962); to Asterostomatidae by Fischer (1966); and to Spatangoida by Sepkoski (2002).
