Paleopneustes was named by Agassiz (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 956]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Asterostomatidae by Fischer (1966); to Paleopneustidae by Henderson (1975); and to Spatangoida by Sepkoski (2002).
