Cypraeactaeon pennai was named by White (1887).

It was recombined as Siphocypraea pennai by Schilder (1941) and Vaught et al. (1989); it was recombined as Cypraea pennai by Ingram (1947); it was recombined as Akleistostoma (Siphocypraea) pennai by Schilder (1968); it was recombined as Cypraea pennae by Ferreira and Cunha (1957) and Araujo Tavora et al. (2010).
