Bulla gibbosa was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is the type species of Cyphoma.
It was recombined as Cyphoma gibbosa by Röding (1798) and Schilder (1941); it was recombined as Ovula (Cyphoma) gibbosa by Dautzenberg (1900); it was recombined as Cyphoma gibbosum by Gardiner (2001).
