Aorograptus was named by Williams and Stevens (1991) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 946]. Its type is Bryograptus victoriae.

It was assigned to Anisograptidae by Williams and Stevens (1991); and to Dendroidea by Sepkoski (2002).
