Polygonograptus was named by Boucek (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u S Ludl Sepkoski's reference number: 931].

It was assigned to Dendrograptidae by Rickards et al. (1990); and to Dendroidea by Sepkoski (2002).

Rickards et al. 1990Probably very low conical rhabdosome, mostly comprising stipes fully anastomosed in such a fashion that they define pentagonal or hexagonal, sometimes sub-circular meshes; attached by disc in one species where earliest stipes are less regularly meshed and with some dissepiments; autothecae probably have denticulate apertures; bithecae smaller, inconspicuous tubes; single line of stolonal development in each stipe.
