Taxonomy
Anas clypeata was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant. Its type specimen is 1. It is the type species of Spatula.

It was recombined as Spatula clypeata by Hay (1902), Boule and De Villeneuve (1927), Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Howard (1946), Wetmore (1956), Clements et al. (2017) and Michailidis et al. (2018).
