Taxonomy
Circus dossenus was named by Olson and James (1991). Its type specimen is BPBM 175709, a limb element (left humerus), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Moomomi Dunes, Pleistocene, which is in a Pleistocene interdune horizon in Hawaii.
