Diplograptus was named as a genus. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Diplograptidae. It was considered unknown by Storch et al. (2011).

It was reranked as Graptolithus (Diplograptus) by Hall (1861).

It was assigned to Graptolithus by Hall (1861); to Graptoloidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Diplograptidae by Storch et al. (2011).
