Taxonomy
Orthograptus was named by Lapworth (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde-u O Ashg-m Sepkoski's reference number: 722]. It is not extant. Its type is Graptolithus quadrimucronatus.

It was reranked as Diplograptus (Orthograptus) by Elles and Wood (1907); it was reranked as Glossograptus (Orthograptus) by Ruedemann (1908).

It was assigned to Diplograptus by Elles and Wood (1907); to Glossograptus by Ruedemann (1908); to Orthograptidae by Mitchell (1987); to Orthograptinae by Goldman (1995); and to Graptoloidea by Sepkoski (2002).
