Orthoretiolites was named by Whittington (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-u O Ashg-l Sepkoski's reference number: 722]. Its type is Orthoretiolites hami.

It was assigned to Diplograptidae by Whittington (1954); to Graptoloidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lasiograptidae by Maletz (2014).

H. B. Whittington 1954Sicula, initial bud and proxi- mal part of th 11, th 21 and th 12 with continuous periderm, remainder of rhabdosome represented by clathria only, rectangular in cross section. Virgula forms central longitudinal strand of lattice on obverse side. Thecae of orthograptid type with straight ventral wall, alternating, overlapping about one-fifth of their length. Development of non-septate diplograptid.
