Tornus was named by Turton and Kingston (1830) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 614]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Cyclostrematidae by Harris and Palmer (1947); to Vitrinellidae by Wienrich (2001); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tornidae by Marquet (1997), Lozouet (1998) and Harzhauser (2002).
