Taxonomy
Mastigograptus was named by Ruedemann (1908) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-u S Sepkoski's reference number: 931]. Its type is Dendrograptus tenuiramosus.

It was assigned to Chaunograptidae by Rickards et al. (1990); to Graptolithina by Sepkoski (2002); to Dithecoidea by LoDuca and Kramer (2014); and to Mastigograptidae by Bates and Urbanek (2002) and Maletz (2017).
