Chordata was named by Haeckel (1847). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Brusca et al. (2016).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Chordata by Nielsen (2012).

It was assigned to Metazoa by Shoshani et al. (1989) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Deuterostomia by Zrzavy et al. (1998), Edgecombe et al. (2011), Nielsen (2012) and Brusca et al. (2016).
