Desmoceras was named by Zittel (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-u K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 730]. It is the type genus of Desmoceratidae, Desmocerataceae, Desmoceratinae.
It was assigned to Desmoceratidae by Whitehouse (1928), Reyment (1955), Benavides-Caceres (1956), Cobban (1972), Henderson (1990) and Matsumoto and Skwarko (1993); to Ammonoidea by Stanton (1895) and Sepkoski (2002); and to Desmoceratinae by Matsumoto (1959), Förster (1975), Cooper (1978), Cooper and Kennedy (1979), Wright and Kennedy (1984), Kennedy et al.
