Apsidognathus was named by Walliser (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-u S Wenl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 800]. Its type is Apsidognathus tuberculatus.

It was assigned to Pterospathodontidae by Sweet (1988); and to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002).
