Hermatostroma was named by Nicholson (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife D Fame Sepkoski's reference number: 363]. It is the type genus of Hermatostromatidae.
It was assigned to Hermatostromatidae by Stearn (1996); to Stromatoporoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trupetostromatidae by Stearn et al. (1999) and Stearn (2015).
