Pirula (Protopirula) capensis was named by Rennie (1930). It is the type species of Protopirula.
It was recombined as Protopirula capensis by Wenz (1938) and Beu et al. (1990); it was recombined as Cypraea capensis by Kiel and Bandel (2003); it was recombined as Sycodes capensis by Squires and Graham (2014).
