Scalaria kinkelini was named by Meyer (1887) [Scalaria Kinkelini]. Its type specimen is Johns Hopkins, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Ottoina kinkelini by Harris and Palmer (1947) and Dockery (1977).
