Distomodus was named by Branson and Branson (1947) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-l S Wenl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 800,867]. Its type is Distomodus kentuckyensis. It is the type genus of Distomodontidae.
It was assigned to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Distomodontidae by Klapper (1981), Sweet (1988) and Pyle and Barnes (2002).
