Taxonomy
Amphibolurus was named by Wagler (1830) [Named in a footnote, referring to the genus “Stellio Daudin”, in which he suggests Amphibolurus as a replacement name for the “vox hybrida” Gemmatophora, a genus proposed by Kaup in order to recieve Lacerta muricata White, and which Wagler found to resemble “Stellio” to a certain degree and to may include Agama barbata Cuvier.]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Agamidae by Smith (1976) and Frank and Ramus (1996).
