Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
W. D. Matthew 1901 (Protomeryx campester)The type species, P. halli, is larger than any Poe'brotherium. No. 8969 represents a smaller species, of the size of Poe'brotherium labiatum, with postcanine diastema equal to p4 in length, and the diastema behind Pr equal in length to p2 , p8 and half of p-. Canine smaller and more recurved than in the type species; first premolar small, two-rooted, trenchant, second, third and fourth in- creasing successively a little in length and much more in width. Molars much as in Poebrotherium, the heel of -m8 more reduced. Distinguished from Protomeryx (Gomphotherium) ster;,bergi by the slenderer jaw with lohger diastemata and higher-crowned, more compressed teeth ; from Protomeryx? (Gomphotherium) serus Douglas by smaller size, different proportion of diastemata, etc.
D. R. Prothero 1996Medium-sized camel (length of Ml-3 = 43-45 mm) with moderately hypsodont teeth and highly reduced premolars (P2-4/M1-3 ratio = 0.506—see Table 4). Distinguished from Poebrotherium, Paratylopus, and Gentilicamelus by its larger size, more hypsodont teeth, and more reduced premolars. Distinguished from Pseudolabis or Miotylopus by less hypsodont teeth and presence of mesostyle. Smaller than Oxydactylus, but otherwise quite similar.
