Pseudotaphrus (Microtaphrus) proavius was named by Cossmann (1888). It is the type species of Pseudotaphrus (Microtaphrus).

It was recombined as Pseudotaphrus proavius by Ponder (1984); it was recombined as Microtaphrus proavius by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995).
