Dentalium mantelli was named by Zittel (1865) [DISTRIBUTION: Cenozoic; Australia-New Zealand.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Entalis mantelli by Tate (1887); it was recombined as Fissidentalium mantelli by Maxwell (2009).
