Monotigma was named by Sowerby (1839) [Gray in G.B. Sowerby, 1839]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Pyramidella (Monotigma) by Harris and Palmer (1947).

It was assigned to Gastropoda by Gray (1847); to Pyramidella by Harris and Palmer (1947); and to Amathinidae by Lozouet et al. (2001).
