Taxonomy
Hoploscaphites birkelundi was named by Landman and Waage (1993). Its type specimen is YPM 27172, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is RB120, Redbird, which is in a Maastrichtian marine sandstone in the Fox Hills Formation of Wyoming.

It was corrected as Hoploscaphites birkelundae by Landman and Cobban (2003).
