Protoprioniodus was named by McTavish (1973) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 800,867].

It was assigned to Oistodontinae by Sweet (1988); to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Paracordylodontidae by Pyle and Barnes (2002).
