Pygodus was named by Lamont and Lindström (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-u O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 867]. It is the type genus of Pygodontidae.
It was assigned to Pygodontidae by Sweet (1988) and Stouge and Bagnoli (1999); and to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002).
