Rossodus was named by Repetski and Ethington (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 867].

It was assigned to Tripodontinae by Sweet (1988); to Oistodontidae by Pyle and Barnes (2002); and to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002).
