Scalpellodus was named by Dzik (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u O Cara-u Sepkoski's reference number: 800]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Cornuodontidae by Stouge (1984); to Acanthodontidae by Sweet (1988); and to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002).
