Clemmys sophiae was named by Ammon (1911). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Dechbetten, which is in a Langhian marine horizon in Germany.

It was recombined as Ocadia sophiae by Schleich (1981); it was recombined as Mauremys sophiae by Hervet (2004).
