Taphrognathus was named by Welles (1947) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 867]. Its type is Hadrokkosaurus bradyi.

It was assigned to Plagiosauridae by Welles (1947); and to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002).
