Tripodus was named by Bradshaw (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Llvi-l Sepkoski's reference number: 867]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Tripodontinae.
It was assigned to Tripodontinae by Sweet (1988); to Acodontidae by Pyle and Barnes (2002); and to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002).
