Vogelgnathus was named by Norby and Rexroad (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u C Serp-u Sepkoski's reference number: 867]. Its type is Spathognathodus campbelli.

It was corrected as Volgelgnathus by Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Polygnathacea by Donoghue et al. (2008).
