Oolithes sphaericus was named by Carruthers (1871). It is considered to be a form taxon. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Stonesfield Slate quarries, which is in a Bathonian marginal marine sandstone in the Taynton Limestone Formation of the United Kingdom.
