Goniatites forcipifer was named by Sandberger and Sandberger (1850).

It was recombined as Probeloceras forcipiferum by Bogoslovsky (1969); it was recombined as Acanthoclymenia forcipifera by House (2002); it was recombined as Acanthoclymenia forcipifer by Korn and Klug (2002).
