Platiferostroma was named by Khalfina and Yavorsky (1973) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame]. It is the type genus of Platiferostromatidae.
It was assigned to Stromatoceriidae by Stearn et al. (1999); to Stromatoporoidea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Platiferostromatidae by Webby (2015).
