Erato neozelanica was named by Murdoch (1924). It is the type species of Proterato.
It was replaced with Proterato (Proterato) awamoana by Schilder (1933); it was recombined as Proterato neozelandica by Gage (1957); it was recombined as Lachryma (Proterato) neozelanica by Cernohorsky (1971); it was recombined as Proterato neozelanica by Schilder (1927) and Beu et al. (1990).
