Erato waitakiensis was named by Laws (1935).

It was recombined as Proterato (Eratoena) waitakiensis by Schilder (1941); it was recombined as Proterato waitakiensis by Fleming (1966); it was recombined as Lachryma waitakiensis by Beu et al. (1990).
