Asterosteus was named by Newberry (1875) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife Sepkoski's reference number: 521]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Asterosteidae by Hay (1902), Jordan (1963) and Denison (1978); and to Rhenanida by Sepkoski (2002).
